IN SOME PARALLEL UNIVERSE >>> A Chinese spy plane entered American airspace and crashed into a U.S. aircraft attempting to intercept it, killing the American pilot. The Chinese plane was captured, and its 24 inhabitants held for questioning by the U.S. government. Outrageously, the Chinese government refused to acknowledge that it had done anything wrong, failing to offer any diplomatic commentary on the tragically killed U.S. pilot, and refusing to apologize for its actions.

After two days, Chinese President Jiang Zemin offered "regret" for the incident, but still refused to apologize for the loss of human life caused by his country's spying mission. China did, however, request that the incident not affect a free trade agreement that means billions of dollars in revenues for Chinese businesses establishing footholds in the United States.

In yet another salvo in the war on morality and good manners, the United States Government, in a rare bi-partisan initiative, launched a full-scale public relations assault on the character of the Chinese Government, citing greed, spying, murder, and a general lack of human decency for its unwillingness to appropriately acknowledge the loss of a citizen's life.

In a tersely worded statement, Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian suggested that the United States simply get over it. "We're not saying we're sorry, we're never saying we're sorry," said Haotian, "Give us back our spies. It's time to move on."

NICE >>> Phony phone calls made in the name of L.A. mayoral candidate, Steve Soboroff claimed that the contender was "slipping in the polls" and relying heavily on "last-minute funding from Jews." Think it was city counselman Joel Wachs, who's running totally negative ads targeted at Soboroff on T.V.? Word has that Villaraigosa is gonna make the final two. I just hope it's not Wachs. His ads are pathetic, and he's scary looking. How's that for in-depth analysis?

NICER >>> PG&E generously awarded over $50,000,000 in bonuses to a total of 6,000 employees the day before filing from bankruptcy. Bankruptcy experts say this happens all the time.

COULD BE WORSE, COULD BE RAINING >>> As if they haven't been through enough, there are stories of dot-commers having to hunt down and document their own W-2 information because defunct companies don't file paperwork. That can't be fun.

FUCKIN' HUMMERS >>> Do you really need that military assault vehicle for driving around Santa Monica, California? Never can be too safe, I guess.

@ @ @ liberal arts @ @ @

WISH I'D SAID IT >>> A European photographer on 16-year old fashion model, Lauren Bush, niece of President Dubya, "She has a stillness about her."

FLICKAGE: "Bridget Jones's Diary" >>> No, I haven't seen it yet. Can this possibly be any good? And can we please get a grammatical ruling on the second 's' in Jones's? I say no.

COACHELLA VALLEY MUSIC FESTIVAL >>> I'm goin'. Are you?

SIX DISK CHANGER >>> Time for another infusion:

1. Mercury Rev, "Deserter's Songs"
2. Flaming Lips, "The Soft Bulletin"
3. Wagonchrist - "Musipal"
4. Harry the Bastard, "Music From Club H, Vol. I"
5. Bel Canto, "Birds of Passage"
6. Pink Floyd - "Wish You Were Here"

7. Duke Rocks, "NCAA Champs Again!!!"

@ @ @

"Hold me now, it's hard for me to say I'm sorry..."

"Sorry seems to be the hardest word..."

"Who's sorry now?"

Sorry stuff.

Much flex,
D.

HAVE YOU ever reconsidered? HAVE YOU done something on the spur of a moment? HAVE YOU eaten anything extra yummy? HAVE YOU found a haven? HAVE YOU considered moving to a new climate? HAVE YOU got an axe to grind? HAVE YOU taken a deep breath lately?

RE: NEW AGENDA >>> Bush Quietly Closes Women's Outreach Office &endash; Boston Globe President Bush has closed the White House Office for Women's Initiatives and Outreach. The closing was not announced, and a White House official declined to explain the move to the Boston Globe, except to say that it ''expired at the end of President Clinton's term.'' The office, which ranged in size from four to nine people, served as a liaison to outside organizations with ideas and questions about pending policies affecting women.

RE: MORE IS LESS >>> Why is it that a "cut" in a program is really just a cut in the growth rate? A budget that proposes just a 4% increase in spending is called a "cut" because it is less than the desired 9% rate of growth...wow, a 5% cut in the budget! People actually buy this political garbage and just listen like sheep to whoever is the so-called speaker for the party that they affiliated themselves with.

I would not claim that Republicans want a smaller government...I would claim that both the Democrats and the Republicans want to increase government, its just that the Republicans don't want to do it as fast - now I sound like a Libertarian, which I am not (at least not registered as).

-- Richard Gianvecchio.

RE: "DANCER IN THE DARK" >>> Just wanted to let you know I saw "Dancer in the Dark" and was completely blown away. Bjork was incredible.

I wrote a note to friends and family to catch the movie without fail, although it is a very difficult movie to watch.

-- Maryse Gardner.

RE: BUSHISMS POETRIFIED >>> MAKE THE PIE HIGHER

by George W. Bush

I think we all agree, the past is over.
This is still a dangerous world.
It's a world of madmen and uncertainty
and potential mental losses.

Rarely is the question asked
Is our children learning?
Will the highways of the Internet
become more few?

How many hands have I shaked?
They misunderestimate me.
I am a pitbull on the pantleg of opportunity.

I know that the human being
and the fish can coexist.

Families is where our nation finds hope,
where our wings take dream.

Put food on your family!
Knock down the tollbooth!
Vulcanize Society!
Make the pie higher! Make the pie higher!
Major league.
