P.O.V. >>> One of the things I look for when I meet an artist is the sense of humility. It's wonderful that they're so talented and all, but can they conceive of others as just as great as they?
It's so boring when an artist, or anyone, reigns with their prodigiousness. Extolling their particular gift, eschewing all others, failing to admire or inquire into yours. Snobbery doesn't always show in the art, but when it does, it's ugly. There has to be the respect for others, the acknowledgment that no matter how great we may be, or our art, we're all in the big scheme very small.
Without perspective, art collapses into itself. With humility and balance, even the minute can be great.
THE BUSH ECONOMY >>> The one who spoke of building a bridge helped technology, communications and big cities flourish. Now the pendulum is swinging to energy companies, oil, military, biomedical, and parochial interests. Wonder what we're going to build with those?
'SPLAIN PLEASE >>> Last year, we didn't have any rolling blackouts at all, did we? Why this new phenomenon? Is it that all of a sudden we have more demand for electricity than the physical supply? Did we cross over some magical infrastructural boundary and now the system just doesn't work?
Or are those who control the supply of energy raising prices so rapidly that it's bringing us to the brink of chaos? It seems to me a contrived shortage, not a physical one. And that should suggest the need for intervention to prevent catastrophe. I'm not seeing any visionary action or clear communication at any level. Who's got the plan to get this one fixed, and why are they keeping it a secret?
APPLE STORES >>> This company cannot afford to be timid. Brick and mortar is a natural extension of the super-successful on-line stores. Textbook case of extending the brand. The greater the experience they can build, the happier their customers will be. Good things to follow.
CRAIG BLOWS CHOW >>> Sorry, Craig Kilborn, but you've fallen below the Conan line. Your smarmy, over the top, aren't I a stud (not) (ha! ha! I'm just kidding) (but I really am) talk show 'persona' is just not witty or winning enough to watch anymore.
TOONAGE: Deep Dish @ The Mayan >>> A more intimate experience this time at the Mayan; unlike previous Liquified DJ John Digweed, Deep Dish is in a more musical place than aspirant to "next big thing" status. "Yoshieseque" is now essential Deep House, and "Yoshiesque 2," if last Thursday is any indication, keeps that party going. The grooves and beats were all over the place all night long. Great fun...not as user-friendly or super-accessible as Digweed. I liked having to meet some jams half way, knowing that there'd be plenty of traction to inspire booty action. Creative, pioneering stuff. Appreciated the low-key presence. Just non-stop, great sounds.
@ @ @
SIX DISK CHANGER >>> For the long ride to and from the desert:
1. Dimitri from Paris,
"Sacrebleu"
2. Deep Dish, "Yoshiesque, Disk 1"
3. Massive Attack, "Protection"
4. Best of Taj Mahal
5. Wagonchrist, "Musipal"
6. Lamb
7. Chocolate Genius, "Black Music"
@ @ @
THAT'S IT >>> It's a matter of folks being able to eat, sleep, and shit in peace. All the rest is noise.
Quietly, humbly, appreciatively...
Your pal,
David.

HAVE YOU ever reconsidered? HAVE YOU done something on the spur of a moment? HAVE YOU eaten anything extra yummy? HAVE YOU found a haven? HAVE YOU considered moving to a new climate? HAVE YOU got an axe to grind? HAVE YOU taken a deep breath lately?
RE: ENERGY OPTIONS >>> What about solar panels? Expensive to buy the panels, but well worth the money when you consider that you can completely take yourself off the whole electricity grid. I'm sure the power companies will freak if people start putting up solar panels. As far as air conditioning goes, in California we have the perfect natural airconditioning. The 20 degree drop we have at night is excellent for airconditioning. Just open your windows at night and let all the cool air in, then close them in the morning. Viola, instant cool air all day.
We need to think outside the box on this one. We have been spoiled in this country with all our luxuries for too long. Let's get out of the mindset that we can't suffer. If we have to go out of our way to make changes to the whole system that controls our energy, let's do it. We need to take back our power, literally and figuratively!
-- Alice Zorthian.
P.S. Start using clotheslines, no matter what your landlord or condo manager says!!
RE: SOURCE OF THE CRUNCH >>> What? Has the Steve Jobs reality distortion field hit you as well? Don't you remember gasoline prices going WAY up before the election? Don't you remember Bill Clinton releasing oil from our strategic reserves to cope with it (unsuccessfully, I might add)? Don't you remember the first waves of deregulation hitting San Diego in early 2000 - BEFORE Bush was even a candidate for President? Don't you remember Clinton denying a request by Gray Davis to cap prices via FERC in mid 2000 on one of Clinton's numerous trips to the state?
Where was Bill Clinton in early 2000 - what did he do to help - or even try to help? Why did Gray Davis reject a call by the California legislature last year to call a special session to discuss California's enrgy woes? Yes there should be an investigation - why didn't Clinton know that something like this could happen, why didn't Clinton do anything to address it (and dipping into our reserves doesn't count because that stunk of politics), why didn't Gray Davis meet with the California legislature?
-- Rick Gianvecchio.
RE: JUNK MAIL ALTERNATIVE >>> Here's the deal...
When you get those pre-approved letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to 2nd Mortgages and junk like that, you know most of them come with postage paid return envelopes, right? Well, why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in these cool little envelopes!
If you didn't get anything else that day, then just send them their application back! Just make sure your name isn't on anything you send them. You can send it back empty if you want. Keep 'em guessing!
Eventually, The banks will begin getting all their crap back in the mail. Let's let them know what it's like to get junk mail, and best of all...THEY'RE paying for it! Twice!
