DEPARTURE >>> The morning of...locked and loaded...United: Busy!...boarding as I get there...Love the Pods!...mine doesn't work...Lionel Richie up front...I'm thinkin', they go all out on entertainment in Domestic First!...he and posse are just jetting to D.C. for a promo...his lady's pod doesn't work either...what happens when you get a bad pod?...switch me with a United employee...sorry, but, cool!..."State and Main," brilliant!...now I know what happens, they offer you a $50 flight certificate, and hope for the best...Lionel's girlfriend didn't get to employee bump...I think he had more than 50 in mind.

United Lounge in D.C....where are those shrimps hiding...A-HA!...flight II, new pod...works this time...seated next to a bachelor party from Philly...very optimistic bunch...shared a guide book on Belgium...drank like fish, slept like bears...I have trouble sleeping, though "Head Over Heels," and "Notting Hill" help...early morning in Amsterdam...carry on, buzz past baggage, customs...long cab to town...very overcast...4 days of rain forecast ahead...Dutch economy puttering along at 3% according to cabbie...he's thinking about starting a business-to-business service closer to home...sounds like a good move to me.

CITY CENTRE >>> Awake in the Haagen Schlaag....going around the Palace Circle: Damstraat (Red Light District), Centraal Station, The Castle, Magna Plaza, down the hill to Leidseplein...and the shopping alley...then the Obelisk directly in the Centre...tall, erect Obelisk...and 4 days of beautiful weather!...the shops with all of those amazing things and ideas and trinkets...endless amusement...the CoffeeShops: friendly, funky, indifferent, unique...Fame Records has new Basement Jazz, Deep Dish, Bran Van 3000, every genre all the way out to the edges...what will be the new hit Europeans enjoy this summer and Americans get next year?...Air is everywhere.

PARADISO (John Cale Solo) >>> Beautiful, old church. Standing room only for former Velvet Undergrounder Cale who brings only a guitar and a piano...every song a winner...he really knows how to finish them...4 encores...appreciative, knowledgeable crowd...music making an emotional connection.

DINING >>> A non-stop garden of delights...Garlic Queen: duck salad, garlic soup, brilliant gambas (shrimp) with chopped garlic and hot peppers in virgin olive oil...milk chocolate brown and white chocolate garlic mousse. It gets better. Jamie Beardsley magically appears!...Friday: Indonesian feast at Sampurna...goat rules!...so do tangy beef sticks...and shrimp puffs...Saturday: Dynasty! On the patio the lobster rolls and duck salad and Spicy Tail of the Ox (LARGE!) plus three favor meats (chicken/shrimp/beef) and wonderful candied ginger with heavy cream and passionfruit sorbet!!!...then came Supper Club.

SUPPERCLUB >>> White, white, so white, this lounge with small dining tables perched on a wall-length dining area. Drinks and music and visuals all served with a smile as you recline and dine with your new 50 new best friends upstairs and downstairs. Not so much social as totally comfortable with five courses of distinguished, light yet substantial treats (seared tuna nicoise, poached whitefish beurre blanc, angel hair linguine Alfredo with calamari, roast tenderloin and a pear/creme torte). The best lay down, indulge, groove and chill night time experience I believe I've ever come across. 4 hour meal. $60 per person, all in.

AND MORE... >>> City boat tour...Friday night house party...Burning Spear at Melkweg sold out (I'd have missed it anyway chillin' at SupperClub)...such a funky/cool/photogenic city...serious damage at Alessi...staying with my yoga...tomorrow: Belgium.

IN BRIEF... >>> Any press coverage of Slobodan Milosevic being taken into custody at The Hague? Big deal here. Americans not too keen on European foreign events, though. Always a kick to ask Europeans what they think of the U.S. electing Dubya President. Not too terribly impressed are they. Quarter point reduction: the economy is stuck until confidence rebounds. They should let Tiger Woods win every golf tournament, or at least lead most of the way so more people will watch. Jack Lemmon makes three. Silently making good on my vow to spend all Independence Days abroad while Junior is in office. Such are the sacrifices we make towards our noble cause.

Haffen de goot hoggin!!!

Love, happiness and much peace from abroad!!!

Your pal,
David.

HAVE YOU ever reconsidered? HAVE YOU done something on the spur of a moment? HAVE YOU eaten anything extra yummy? HAVE YOU found a haven? HAVE YOU considered moving to a new climate? HAVE YOU got an axe to grind? HAVE YOU taken a deep breath lately?

RE: MUSIC THOUGHTS >>> I knew the Mad Professor was going to be an amazing show - thanks for carrying the torch for all of us music maestros. By the way, I noticed Stereo MC's in your 6-disk changer. Is it me or is this the most disappointing comeback of the year? I have yet to get through a single listen of this cd without having to switch to something else.

-- Andrew Schauer.

RE: HOW MUCH FOR THE GRAIL? >>> Budget for Python was $250K, fyi.

-- Nick Goodman.
