CIRCUS SMIRKUS >>> First time back to Europe since last year's election. Hard to believe U.S. legitimacy could fall so far so fast. Once we were leading the world economy, mediating global arguments, running the show with a President that people in other countries liked. Never underestimate the power of a likable leader. Now our economy's in the dumper, our foreign policy is separatist and untrusted, and we are led by the most lowly regarded, least respected President in 7 decades (not counting Senior). Eight years undoing the international debacle of Reaganomics, and here we are right back where we started. Americans may not see it because they're not really looking, but the world is frowning upon us. And Dubya is smirking back.
TRIP LAAG, PT. DEUX >>> Brugges is the pearl of Belgium...beautiful...they know how to eat there...Brussels is hot, a bit land-locked...chocolates are like from another (better) planet...when trains are more than 10 minutes late people are shocked...DJ Krush at Paradiso, danced/sweated my ass off...the sun is up from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. in Amsterdam in summer...Van Gogh Museum...passionfruit juice...Vincent's styles evolving before your eyes...one more trek through the Haagen Schlaag...upgraded to First!!!...Montgomery, Vermont...The Black Lantern Inn...beautiful moonrise...warm, personal wedding...mind-blowing breakfasts...long trip home...wiped.
LIFE'S A BEACH >>> Little Jessie Arbogast, lying in the sand with his arm severed and a huge chunk out of his leg. His uncle jumps in the ocean, grabs the 7 foot bull shark that attacked his nephew, wrestles him to the beach, finds someone to shoot the shark in the head, and reaches down the shark's throat to pull the arm out of his stomach. It's a remarkably clean bite, so they re-attach the arm and patch the leg but he's still in super-critical condition due to extreme loss of blood. His chances of surviving are slim, but thanks to his uncle they're not yet zero. Is it bad luck that he was attacked in the first place, or good luck that he has any chance at all left to live? It depends on when you start keeping track. Quite a story. Quite an uncle. Quite a little boy. I hope he makes it.
JOLLY OLD ENGLAND >>> It's nothing less than cruel fate that cost Tim Henman a chance to be England's first Wimbledon champion since the 30s. Henman lost in the semifinals to Pete Sampras last year, and had gone ahead of Goran Ivanesevic in this years semis by taking all but 4 points in a 6-0 third set on Friday. Then the rains came. From there it took two, agonizing days for Henman's hopes to fizzle in the drizzle. Ivanesevic won the fourth set on Saturday, the fifth set and the match on Sunday, and then took Patrick Rafter in the finals on Monday. Maybe next year for Henman and the Brits.
POP GOES THE WEASEL >>> Pure media magic: Bono expounding for MTV Europe on the difference between rock and pop. "Pop says everything is great, beautiful, perfect...rock says it's not and that things have got to change." Bono offers up the Sex Pistols, Amnesty International, and U2 (natch) as quintessentially rock. Edge earnestly shaking his head "Yes."
Then MTV launches into the latest U2 video, a 4 minute commercial for the Lara Croft flick. Never forget that Bono is the guy who refused to perform without his favorite hairdresser flown in from the States.

Among the many benefits of getting away, far away, is the perspective it affords. To see what works, what needs to change, and what just is. Life viewed from another angle is still life. Just different.
Have a strong week.
Your pal,
David.
