BUSH OR BUSCH >>> A political haiku.
Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush
Bush Busch Bush Busch Bush Busch Bush?
Busch Busch Busch Busch Busch.
BUSH OR BUSCH >>> A political analysis.
What is the principal difference between the oligarchy that runs the world's biggest brewery, and the one that's running (ruining?) the world? Here's a hint: you gotta "see" it.
BUSH OR BUSCH >>> The dialectic.
Who has the power now? The Politicians or the Corporations? And what, if any, relationship do these two entities have to the People?
@ @ @
CHEATERS SUCK >>> How awful that father in the Bronx who lied about his son's age to help him dominate Little League Baseball. No wonder no one could hit him: he was 14 years old, and the league's age limit is 12. Even though they'll forfeit all of their games, think of about all of the teams who missed the playoffs or were eliminated unfairly because of him. The people who perpetrated this, the boy's father, and possibly the team's Manager, can't be punished enough. OK, maybe death is a bit severe. But here's an act truly worthy of our contempt. Another shining example of Post-Millenial American Sportsmanship.
IN ACTION >>> Guiding social discourse and great dramatic art each rely on the same guiding principal: that the conflict of two diametrically opposed ideas, or ideals, will generate truth. Do not categorically shy away from the contrasts or clashes. They may be the dialectic giving birth to new light.
PERSONAL FINANCE >>> No more extravagances. Strict priorities: social expansiveness, personal growth, and long-term health & comfort. Plus the rare, worthy philanthropic endeavor. OK, and a really great dinner now and again.
DIET >>> My new wonderdrink: spinach, celery, cucumber, carrot, beet, kale, and ginger juice. 24 oz.
Makes you feel healthy just reading about it, don't it? Wait till you drink one. Makes the next 10 or so hours simply brilliant.
I could conceive of a singular diet of fresh fruit smoothie for breakfast, wonderdrink juice for lunch, and sushi for dinner that would make my life as healthy, long-lasting, and culinarily fulfilled as it could ever be (aside from the occasional, really great dinner). It's a Desert Island Diet.
THINGS WE LEARN FROM TV >>> This week separate reality TV "experiments" showed us that:
1) Friends will purposefully, competitively challenge their friends in order to defeat them, or diminish their possibilities for advancement.
2) In a competition for who could curry the most favor, a Lawyer, a Babe, a Hunk, and an Elderly Lady squared off for the first annual Dateline Sponge-Off. The winner, the Lawyer, who just weaseled the hell out of everyone until he got what he wanted.
WHAT TIME IS IT? >>> Are Destiny's Childs' 15 minutes up yet? Can anyone stand that "Bootylicious" thing? That song SUCKS.
O, MADONNA >>> I want the guy's version of Madonna's body. She is fucking ON IT!!! The music wasn't half-bad, either.
FLICKAGE: "Rat Race" >>> Surprisingly, laughed my ass off at this homage to "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" by Jerry Zucker ("Airplane," "Naked Gun"). Not as campy as Mr. Zucker's calling cards, "Rat Race" is just old-fashioned, smart fun, satire lite with lots of great gags. The Monster Truck scene had me on the floor. Seriously. I had to look away from the screen I was laughing so hard. Funny, funny stuff. Really enjoyed it.
TOONAGE: Ozomatli @ Santa Monica Pier >>> Ten thousand sardines smashed together Thursday night on Santa Monica Pier to get a piece of the free Ozomatli show. They heard a very promising band with a really great live presence making some beautiful noise. An Ozomatli perfomance isn't so much a concert as it is a tribal dance festival, with much letting down of hair, wild gesticulation, and rejoicing. Which is why the mob scene Thursday was so oppressive: who wants to stand around while these guys are playing?
The trick, for those who've seen the band before, or aren't ones to bolt the scene once the band leaves the stage, is that Ozomatli plays with the crowd after they've played for the crowd. So the few faithful who stuck around were treated to another 20 minutes of acoustic Ozo, much like the hidden track at the end of a CD. Ozo has soul. Staying true to their roots. A good plan for a roots band with a bright future among the crowds.

LONG DISTANCE DEDICATION >>> This week marks the end of an era in the city where I live. Mr. Dan Bernstein, long the guiding force of the Psycho-sexual Techno-architectural movement in Los Angeles from his compound on Henry Ridge (atop Topanga Canyon) has flown the proverbial beachside coop. Mr. Dan is leaving our splendid coast, and its peoples, and our glorious weather for the wild, urban terrain of New York City. Instead of roping steer, malleting polo balls, and generally racing ahead at a full gallop, the Bernie-Man will now be wandering the great, modern maze with the wide-eyed and articulate. Good luck, Dan. We're proud of all your accomplishments, and will miss your unwavering enthusiasm. Looking forward to more amazing exploits of You in the City. You may be living there, but you will always have a home in all your friends' hearts back here. Go get 'em, Buddha Boy! :)

RE: FAMOUS LAST WORDS >>> Regarding Francis Ford's fav word word being : hope.
how about:
sellout
burnout
"Jack" (ouch, flinch)
Here's 4 good words: Quit while you're ahead.
Don't mar the legacy of "Rumblefish" and "The Black Stallion" by making trash like, well, "Jack."
-- Psalm Isadora.
RE: WHAT'S HOT, WHAT'S NOT? >>> What's HOT?
Jelly Belly "The Rookie Team" jellybeans. These are not your father's (or Ron Reagan's father's) jellybeans. Nine new flavors that put the old guard to shame including Dr. Pepper and Tobasco. Favorite Rookie: Red Apple. Surprisingly good in spite of the well covered territory of apple flavored candy (and I've tried them all). Least favorite Rookie: Caramel Corn. I don't even like real caramel corn. The Rookie Team is not available everywhere. I've only seen them at Bed Bath and Beyond at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles (a store that remains eternally on the What's Hot list). But even at B3 they are sometimes hard to come by. It seems that when a new shipment arrives the staff of the store often eats these beanie babies before they even hit the shelves.
What's NOT?
Eating Ray Liotta's brains. Don' flip your lid, but I just got around to seeing Hannibal on DVD. I'll resist the expected, "It's not as good as the first one." I'm still trying to get some of the gruesome images out of my head so there's something there. I'm just always not sure what. Actually there was at times a rather skillful mixing of emotions: repulsion, laughter, and beauty. Let's face it (sorry) we were all waiting for H to do something really gruesome. And Sir Anthony certainly looks better in evening wear than prison issue. Love the suit.
-- David Walske.
RE: OUR KELLY'S IN A PLAY! >>> "The Cover of Life" is a comic drama written by R.T. Robinson. It's 1943, and three brothers enlisted in three branches of the military, to serve their country at war. Their wives all go live with the boys' mamma in Sterlington, Louisiana. Life Magazine gets wind of the situation and sends a reporter from New York City to do a cover piece. I play one of the wives.
